Why do fans do what they do?

For me it was organic. I am one of the lucky ones to have grown up in a college town like Auburn, Alabama.. From the time Bo Jackson went "Over the Top" in the 1982 Iron Bowl, I was officially hooked on college football. These last 40 or so years, I feel like I have seen it all. Kick Sixes, The Kick, Crane Kicks, championships, probations, celebrations and pure agony.

Why do we continue as ordinary citizenry to torture ourselves with the ups, downs, and sideways nature of a game that children play in the front yard?

Because, as fanatics, this is the life we choose.

I left Auburn a few times, but it gets in your blood and I imagine one day I will leave it for good. In a pine box.

40 years ago, the only place to really capture the stories and passions of the game was in your local newspapers. Over time, technology, for better or worse, has provided more platforms for you and me to discuss the game. I'm old enough to remember listening to games with Jim Fyffe on The Auburn Network because there was no cable TV. In 1984 against FSU, "it was a wild and woolly shootout!" while in 1986, "the end around to Tillman" took care of Alabama late with "the reverse".

Sports talk radio hit the scene in the early 90s and I would stay up late to listen to an AM station out of Tallassee (the original T-Town, baby!) nightly just to gather any info on recruiting. We, as fans, have gone from magazines like Lindy's to websites to message boards to call in shows to podcasts to TikTok and beyond. There is even a TV Station dedicated to our beloved South Eastern Conference.

The change in football, like the changes in how it is covered by media, is constant. It is enough to make your head spin. Are there some days where you almost feel left behind? With so many options, where can the average fanatic go to really talk and express how they feel about the game that they love?

The community at Radio Free Auburn is just the place for you. Blasting out reasonable takes on college football from, not a professional, but a fan just like you. From the fan, for the fan. This is not media, this is not journalism, but real raw emotions in real time.
